Algebra
Lesson 5-1
Vocabulary:
Slope A ratio of the rise over run is a slope of a line.
Rate of Change Tells how a quantity is changing, on average, over time.
Examples:
slope (m) is equal to y sub 2 minus y sub 1 over
x sub 2 and x sub 1.
Your given to points...
(4,5), (1,3)
You can plug it in to the slope equation...
3-5=-2 over
1-4=-3
so...
-2 over -3 equals two-thirds because the negatives cancel out.
You can also find the slope of a line by...
Look at the graph.
Make an imaginary right triangle of where the slope rises and runs.
For example, from the coordinates (1,3), it rises up 2 units.
And from the coordinates (1,5) ,the spot it rose to from the coordinates (1,3),
you run 3 units over to get to (4,5).
So, the slope of the line is two-thirds.
Additional Information:
Classifying Lines
Positive Slope- The line slopes up from left to right.
Negative Slope- The line slopes down from left to right.
Slope of 0- Is a horizontal line.
Undefined Slope- Is a vertical line.
