Lesson 5-5
In this lesson we are going to be talking about point slope form.
Vocabulary:
Point-slope form- An equation of the form y-y1 = m(x-x1), where m is the
slope and (x1,y1) is a given point on a non-vertical line
Point-slope form- An equation of the form y-y1 = m(x-x1), where m is the
slope and (x1,y1) is a given point on a non-vertical line
Examples:
1. Write the point slope from an equation for a
line that passes through (1,4) with slope 2.
y-y1 = m(x-x1)
y-4 = 2[x-(1)]
y-4 = 2(x-1)
2. Write the point slope equation for a line that passes through the points (2,4) and (3,6).
Find the slope (m). y2 - y1 =m
x2 - x1
Substitute your points. 6 - 4 =m
3-2
Solve. 2
1 or 2 = m.
The point slope equation is y-y1 = m(x-x1).
The point slope equation is y-y1 = m(x-x1).
So, put in your y1, slope (m), and x1 to get: y-4 = 2(x-2)
3. Find the point slope equation for a line that has a slope of -8 and passes through a point (-9, 0)
The point slope equation is y-y1 = m(x-x1).
Substitute your slope (m) and your y1 (0) and x1 (-9)
Your equation should look like this:
y-0=-8(x+9) [or y=-8(x+9)]
4. Lets try one more... Find the point slope equation for a line that has a slope of 5 and passes through a point (8,9).
The point slope equation is y-y1 = m(x-x1).
Substitute your slope and your y1 and x1 to get:
y-9= 5(x-8)
5. Find the point slope equation for a line that passes through (6,3) with a slope of 6
y-y1=m(x-x1).
substitute (m), (y1), and (x1) to get
y-3=6(x-6)

Remember that a horizontal line (shown to the left) has NO SLOPE!!! (or a slope of zero)
Also remember that a vertical line has an undefined slope. (You can't divide by 0, but you can divide 0)
