Algebra
Lesson 5-6
Vocabulary:
parallel lines: parallel lines in the same plane that do not intersect and have the same slope.
Perpendicular lines: Lines that intersect at right angles.
Examples:
y-y sub-1=m(x-x sub-1)
Parallel Equations
(-1,3) y=4x+1 (-6,-4) y=1/3x+3 (1,3) y=x+2
1. Fill in the equation 1. Fill in the equation 1. Fill in the equation
y-3=4(x+1) y+4=1/3(x+6) y-3=1(x-1)
2.Distrubitive Property 2. Distributive Property 2. Distubitive Property
y-3=4x+4 y+4=1/3x+6/3 or y+4=1/3x+2 y-3=1x-1
3. Add 3 on both sides 3. Subtract 4 on both sides 3. Add 3 on both sides
y=4x-7 y=1/3x+(-2) or y=1/3x-2 y=1x+2
Perpendicular Equation
(1,2) y=-1/4x+0
1. Fill in the equation
y-2=4/1(x-1) or y-2=4(x-1)
2. Distrubitive Property
y-2=4/1x-4
3. Add 2 on both sides
y=4/1+2
Additional Information: Parallel; same slope
Perpendicular; opposite reciprocal
ex. 1/3...-3/1 or -3
2...-1/2
When the equation doesn't have a number before x then the x equals 1
