Algebra
Lesson 2-1
Vocabulary:
- natural number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
- whole number: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... (counting numbers)
- integers: ...-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4...
- positive number: numbers larger than zero
- negative number: numbers less than zero
- rational number: any number that can be written as a fraction, a decimal that either repeats or terminates
- infinity: represented by the symbol: ∞ means that it continues forever, no end
- graph: draw points representing numbers on a number line
- coordinate: number that identifies a point on a number line
- absolute value: a number's distance from zero, always positive
Examples:
Graphing on a number line:
1.) Name the points graphed on this number line
Look for the points, they are located at -6, -3, 2, and 4.The set of numbers graphed is {-6, -3, 2, 4}
Evaluate expressions containing absolute values
2.) Evaluate |3| + 4x + |x| given x = -4
Replace the variables with the given value.|3| + 4(-4) + |-4|Find the absolute values3 + 4(-4) + 4Follow the order of operations, so we multiply3 + (-16) + 4Add-13 + 4 = -9
