Creating the Online Study Guides
Places To Start
- Google.com
- Do a search on your favorite search engine for the title of the section or some of the terms contained in the section to find pages related to your topic.
- These websites have a good selection of different online activities.
- These websites have information and some drill & practice activities.
- OpenOffice.org
- The free download OpenOffice Writer allows you to insert special characters and format things as you would see in a math textbook. Microsoft Word also has this functionally, but it usually isn't installed by default.
- To create an example using some of the special formatting, type with you'd like in Writer, then with it on the screen hit the Print Screen key on your keyboard. Paste the screen shot into an image editor, like Paint. Select and copy the example, then paste it into your web document.
- Please don't feel limited to these websites. Anything you can track down online is fair game!!
Examples
Click here for an example of what a completed lesson could look like. You are not required to make it look exactly like this! You just need to meet the requirements below.
Requirements
- The categories Vocabulary, Examples, Additional Resources, Online Activities, and Pictures must have appropriate information in them. If there are no pictures that pertain to a particular section, for example, that category may be deleted.
- The class will be divided as evenly as possible into groups that will be responsible for each section of the chapter. New groups will be assigned for each chapter.
- Each student will receive an email invitation allowing them access to their section on Google Docs. You will only have access to one section in each chapter.
- The due date for each section will be the day after we correct the assignment from the section in class. This will allow for enough time to clear up any questions you may have on a section. In addition, the material will still be fresh in your mind.
- The final product for each section will be viewable by anyone browsing mrbrandl.com and should be a great study aid in preparing for quizzes and tests.
- Because this is a public webpage, no names or other personal information will be allowed on the pages for privacy reasons. The by line at the bottom of the page will contain just initials.
- Google Docs allows me, as the owner of the documents, to see exactly what changes each individual has made in their section. Each member of the group should contribute approximately the same amount to the project. If any member doesn't do their share, their grade will be adjusted accordingly.
- The project will be worth 30 points, broken down as follows:
- Accuracy - 10 points: The material presented is accurate and applies to the section in which it is posted.
- Completeness - 10 points: Each section, if possible, contains some appropriate information.
- Organization - 10 points: Information is presented in a clear and readable format. There are no spelling errors or unnecessary formatting.
- Above all, this is NOT meant to increase your workload in class. This is simply by another way you can demonstrate and share your math knowledge. My intention is that I'll be able to scale back the number of problems assigned as homework with this project in place.
